Blog #4 - Coding For Kids (SCRATCH!)

Scratch! What a fun application! I modified an existing Scratch lesson so it would connect to the Grade 3 Alberta Education Program of Studies for Science and Technology. This is a fun lesson where students are able to present their favourite Canadian animal through a Scratch coding project. They will demonstrate their understanding of the animal food chain and what their animal needs to survive (e.g. food and environment).

Scratch is a fun app to integrate any subject with Information and Communication Technology outcomes. This is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned and apply in a new and fun way using technology and coding. Coding is a concept I have never learned when I was in school but I find that it can be a beneficial learning experience for students. I would definitely like to use Scratch in my future lessons as it provides the opportunity for students to experiment, explore, practice following step-by-step instructions, and problem solve. It is also a great alternative way for students to consolidate their learning!

  1. That's amazing to hear your ways of modifying a lesson plan with Scratch. I hope and look forward to hearing the different ways everyone can implement Scratch as a tool.

  2. I love the idea of modifying a lesson plan to make it work for your students. Especially with programs, such as Scratch, that we may not know how to use very well. We can still incorporate fun and innovative ways for our students to learn, and we are engaging in career long learning as well!
